The Process
What to expect when starting Play Therapy
Step 1: Parent Intake
Every family begins with a parent intake appointment. This session allows you to share your child’s history, describe current concerns, and ask questions. Together we clarify goals and outline the next steps in the Play Therapy process. This session is held at our beautiful clinic in Nambour or online, depending on the needs of your family.
Step 2: Assessment
Your child then attends one or more assessment sessions in-person at the clinic. Assessment may include structured tools as well as play-based experiences to understand your child’s development, play skills, and how they experience relationships and the world around them. This helps guide the direction of therapy.
An Integrative Approach
I practice as an Integrative Play Therapist, drawing on multiple evidence-based approaches to meet your child where they are. Some children require mental health support, such as anxiety or emotional regulation work. Others benefit from structured support to strengthen play skills and social understanding. In some cases, parents are supported through coaching or Filial Play Therapy. The approach is tailored to your child and family.
Step 3: Ongoing Therapy
Once assessment is complete, regular therapy sessions begin at the clinic in Nambour.
Step 4: Parent Collaboration
Parents are an important part of the process. Review sessions are held periodically to discuss progress, adjust goals, and strengthen support at home. Some families also participate in Filial Play Therapy, where parents learn practical Play Therapy skills to use with their child. Review sessions are held either in our Nambour clinic or online.
How Long Does Therapy Take?
The length of therapy varies depending on your child’s needs and the nature of the concerns. Some children benefit from shorter-term support, while others require longer-term work. Progress is reviewed regularly and decisions are made collaboratively, with the focus on steady, sustainable change.
